SEO Videos from OMS - Internal and External Link Building Strategies

Hello again everyone. Sorry I have been MIA this week, although I did do a guest blog over at the OMS site about the 4 most common way that marketers squander resources for SEO. But I have been incredibly busy with client work, developing new internal processes for the SEO team, and putting together my OMS presentation for next Tuesday in Houston. I am happy to say that my band has been selected for Hyperfest 2008 in New Mexico which is very exciting for us, but the planning of that event is cutting into my free time (think blog time..lol). So that's my long winded apology for taking so long to get these new link strategy videos up.

Obviously these videos are not comprehensive guides to linking but I think there is a lot of solid advice on the subject of both internal and external links that you hopefully will gleam a couple SEO tips from. Let me know what you think!

Going to do an In-house SEO Training Course For a Content Team Today

I am going to visit one of our local clients today to do an SEO training course for their content team. It's really a good idea for an business to augment their SEO campaign with some in house training for all Web associates. The thing is, SEO affects every facet of your Web site and often times, your Web strategy. So when you align all stakeholders in a common vision as it relates to SEO, you significantly increase your chances for success.

Content writers without SEO experience, often write with too many assumptions that the audience is familiar with their content, industry jargon, etc. So its a good game plan to expose those people to some of the methods that search engines use to rank content. That way they can incorporate those SEO nuances into their culture of writing.

Two specific examples of this come to mind. The first one is a long standing joke on my SEO team that for some reason software companies never use the word software in their content. We have had a number of software companies that we have helped. And in each of those cases, one of our recommendations was to increase the number of times that they used the word software in content and meta data. Often times we forget that despite advances in latent semantic indexing, Google does not inherently know that words are related. For example, that AutoCAD is software.

The second example of SEO methods that should be incorporated into the culture of writing content is to expand on pronouns. So lets look at the following sentences:

"Our database software is really cool. It lets me track sales in real time."
(incidentally, this sentence was not taken from one of our clients..lol)

But these sentences could be changed to:

"Our database management software, Brand X, is really cool. The advanced features of this data warehousing program let me track sales in real time."

So the second sentence is a little longer but gives additional keyword focus to:
"data warehousing", "data warehousing program" and "database management software" as well as other valuable permutations of those phrases. So in the first sentence, we just added another adjective. In the second sentence we replaced a pronoun with a noun and a prepositional phrase (I swear I haven't used the term since high school..lol). But the end result is adding a lot more keywords to the content and conveying more specific information to the user. It's a win win. Just make sure you always focus on enhancing content in such a way as to always benefit the user by giving more detail. That's a KEY point in this process.

So the point is, getting everyone in your organization on the same page in terms of your approach to SEO is critical for success. And as it relates to content writers, the ideas of writing as if the person had no idea of what your content was about and the idea of expanding on pronouns can be very effective for SEO. Gotta go, have a great day!

More Videos from OMS - Duplicate Content Issues and the SEO Benefits of Authoritative Content

Here are a couple more videos of my presentation from OMS. I went a little out of order on these because of a couple reasons. I omitted the Flash video because it is now outdated based on recent developments. However, all I really did is reference Benj's excellent post about SEO for Flash. He should be updating it soon based on the new Abode announcement (*hint hint Benj!). The other video I omitted is about Page Titles. As many people know, I am a proponent of Page Titles that are longer than 64 characters. However, we are in the process of doing some new testing with regard to Page Titles and I would rather save that video for my upcoming blog post on the subject.

Here is the first video and the last of the site wide videos (since I won't be using the Flash video). This video addresses duplicate content issues in search engine optimization:

So instead we will jump into the second On Page recommendation from my presentation which is to create authoritative content. As you can tell from this video, this is a subject that I am passionate about because I think it has the biggest long term SEO benefit in addition to really being a huge driver of overall Web strategy.

I will be releasing the Off Page recommendations on Friday and a summary of the presentation. Thanks for all the encouraging comments to date both here on the blog as well as on FaceBook, Twitter and Sphinn. I really appreciate it.

For those who asked, I will be presenting at OMS Denver, Houston and San Jose and I will be speaking about the Impact of Social Media sites on SEO. At the San Diego session I will be doing a joint presentation with our usability ninja Thanh Nguyen on the integration of Usability and SEO.

Have a great week!

Online Marketing Summit (OMS) Preview - How to Use Google Webmaster Tools for SEO

** Just posted the next two SEO videos from this presentation on Wed, July 9th, 2008..

With the Online Marketing Summit's regional tour on the horizon, I thought it would be a good time to give everyone a taste of the kind of material that is presented at OMS. So I contacted the always helpful OMS marketing team and got their permission to release some video footage of my presentation here in San Diego last February. The presentation was entitled "SEO: Unveiling the Black Box - Everything You Want to Know that an SEO Wont Tell You". Now before all you fellow SEO's think I've been sniffin a little too much glue on the side, I didn't come up with the title..lol. So I will give you a more accurate title of the presentation: "Good SEO Practices for an Ongoing SEO Campaign". In other words, this presentation centers around the kinds of activities you want to be doing once the initial optimization of the site has been completed.

The first two videos I am releasing for this presentation are focused on how to effectively use Google Webmaster Tools to augment an existing SEO campaign. I basically go over each section of Google's Webmaster tools and how to use the information provided there to enhance your overall SEO performance. Keep in mind that this presentation was done in February of 2008, so there may be some slight variations in what is displayed now. Please let me know what you think of the videos. I will be posted the rest of the hour long presentation here soon. Have a great week!
